Between the Mediterranean, terraced vineyards and the Pyrenees peaks, a Catalan land to experience during your stay. Everything you need to know, in seven steps.
In the south of France, Roussillon is the heart of the Catalan Country. The Côte Vermeille unfolds about thirty kilometers of coastline between Cerbère and Argelès-sur-Mer, with Banyuls, Port-Vendres and Collioure as its jewels. Sea, terraced vineyards and Pyrenean peaks share a single horizon.
From 1262 to 1344, Roussillon belonged to the Kingdom of Majorca, a time of prosperity when towns were granted charters of freedom. It became part of France with the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659, after which Vauban fortified the border. Today, the language, traditions and cuisine still bear a strong Catalan imprint.
The Côte Vermeille, with its orange schist cliffs, coves and harbors. The Roussillon plain around Perpignan, with its markets and orchards. And the Catalan hinterland: the Canigó massif, the Vallespir and Conflent valleys, and the Cerdagne.
In Collioure, the Fauvism Trail links 19 reproductions of works by Matisse and Derain along the colorful lanes, under the gaze of the Royal Castle. In Perpignan, the Palace of the Kings of Majorca bears witness to the Catalan past. In Banyuls, a museum is dedicated to the sculptor Aristide Maillol.
The Collioure vines, the southernmost vineyard in France, cling to schist slopes in dry-stone terraces between sea and mountains. The Collioure and Banyuls appellations are the stars. At the table: Collioure anchovies, fish from the coast, crème catalane, and a glass of Banyuls for dessert.
Coastal paths between coves and terraced vineyards, diving, kayaking, sailing, cycling and mountain hiking. In winter, the ski resorts of the Catalan Pyrenees even let you ski in a single day.
Figueres is less than an hour from Collioure. Its Dalí Theatre-Museum is a must-see, and the three Dalí museums (Figueres, Portlligat-Cadaqués, Púbol) require at least two days. Cadaqués and the Costa Brava complete a getaway to Catalonia.
