Mountain and skiing
An authentic Savoyard village, Le Chinaillon at the foot of the slopes and the Aravis peaks all around: Le Grand-Bornand is a joy in winter and summer alike. Everything you need to know, in seven steps.
Le Grand-Bornand nestles in the Aravis range, in Haute-Savoie, between Annecy and Mont Blanc. The village sits in the valley at around 1,000 m (3,300 ft); above it, Le Chinaillon, its ski hamlet, opens straight onto the slopes. Our home is there, with a panoramic view of the peaks.
For centuries, the valley lived from farming and its high pastures: herds were taken up in summer and Reblochon was made there. The large wooden farmhouses, granaries and chapels still bear witness to it. After 1860, when Savoy became part of France, skiing transformed the valley in the 20th century, without erasing the village’s farming soul.
The village, with its church, market and shops. Le Chinaillon, its old village and the lifts. And all around, the Aravis peaks, the Col des Annes and Col de la Colombière passes, and the neighbouring Bouchet and Thônes valleys.
Every winter, Le Grand-Bornand hosts a stage of the Biathlon World Cup, which sets the valley buzzing. In late August, the “Au bonheur des mômes” festival turns the village into an open-air stage for children. The rest of the year, mountain-pasture festivals and markets keep Savoyard traditions alive.
Reblochon was born here, on the farms of the Aravis: you can watch it being made and buy it straight from the producer. It is enjoyed in tartiflette, alongside fondue, raclette and diots sausages. To go with it all, Savoy wines: crisp whites from Apremont or Chignin, and Mondeuse for red.
In winter: downhill skiing from Le Chinaillon, cross-country skiing, biathlon, snowshoeing and sledging. In summer: hiking to lakes and mountain pastures, mountain biking, paragliding and cycling over the legendary Tour de France passes. Lake Annecy and its beaches are 45 minutes away.
Annecy and its lake are 45 minutes away, Geneva about an hour. Chamonix and the Mont Blanc massif can be reached in just over an hour. Plenty of choice to alternate days on the slopes or trails with outings to the lake, the city or the high mountains.
