Between turquoise waters, Alpine peaks and an old town laced with canals, Lake Annecy is a joy in every season. Everything you need to know, in seven steps.
In the heart of Haute-Savoie, Lake Annecy stretches for almost 15 km between the Bornes and Bauges mountain ranges. Renowned for the purity of its water, it is lined with villages such as Talloires, Menthon-Saint-Bernard and Duingt. Our homes are in Talloires, on the eastern shore, and in Argonay, on the edge of Annecy.
Annecy was the capital of the County of Genevois, whose counts lived in the castle overlooking the old town. In the 17th century, Bishop Francis de Sales settled here and the town became a religious centre. Savoy became part of France in 1860; it keeps a strong Alpine identity, between traditions, heritage and a gentle way of life.
The lake and its shores, with beaches, harbours and villages. The peaks around it: La Tournette, Le Semnoz and the Dents de Lanfon. And, less than an hour away, the Aravis and Bauges ranges, with their mountain pastures and ski resorts.
Annecy’s old town, crossed by the canals of the Thiou, has earned the city its nickname, the “Venice of the Alps”. The Palais de l’Île and the castle are its landmarks. Every summer, the Lake Festival ends with a grand fireworks display, and the Annecy International Animation Film Festival brings together studios from all over the world.
In Reblochon country, tartiflette, fondue and raclette warm up winter evenings. The lake provides féra (whitefish) and perch, served on lakeside terraces. To go with it all, Savoy wines: crisp whites from Apremont or Chignin, and Mondeuse for red.
Swimming, paddleboarding, sailing and rowing on the lake; cycling around it on the greenway; hiking up La Tournette or Le Semnoz. The Col de la Forclaz, above Talloires, is one of Europe’s top paragliding spots. In winter, the Aravis ski resorts are about 45 minutes away.
Geneva and its famous fountain are 45 minutes away. Chamonix and the Mont Blanc massif can be reached in just over an hour, and Lyon in under two. Plenty of choice to alternate lakeside days with city breaks or high-mountain outings.
